Children’s Myopia Control

Giving them the best help we can

We diagnose and can potentially slow down myopic (short-sightedness) progression in your child so they are less reliant on their glasses and less likely to be affected by certain eye conditions.

Myopia (short-sightedness)
A person with myopia can see clearly up close – when reading a book or looking at a phone – but words and objects look fuzzy on a blackboard, on TV screens or when driving.

Myopia in children
Childhood-onset myopia is most commonly caused by the eyes growing too quickly, or continuing to grow after age 10-12 when eye growth should normally cease. Genetics, environment and the individual’s characteristics can all contribute to this excess growth. In younger children, myopia progresses more quickly because their eyes are growing at a faster rate, leading to higher levels of myopia, stronger glasses and more eye health risks.

Myopia control at Sightcare
Myopia Control (AKA Myopia Management) is a treatment designed to reduce the progression of myopia by 40–60% using specially designed glasses or contact lenses.

If successful, a child will have a lower level of myopia in comparison to no treatment and may be less dependent on their glasses. Their prescription will also be smaller. Less myopia means that they’re less likely to be affected by conditions such as retinal detachments, myopic retinal degeneration and glaucoma.

  • Glasses
For children diagnosed with myopia, we prescribe specially-designed glasses that look the same as traditional glasses but alter the focus in their peripheral vision. We use Essilor’s newly released Stellest Lenses which can slow down myopic progression by an average of 67% compared to single vision (traditional) lenses when worn 12hrs a day.

  • Contact lenses
We prescribe soft, daily disposable contact lenses to enable children to enjoy clear, glasses-free vision. These special lenses change the focus of light in the peripheral vision to slow myopia's progression and correct short-sightedness. Contact lenses are available to children ages eight and above.
